Lismore Kayak Marathon Race report

Far North Coast Canoe Club is really pleased with our Lismore Kayak Marathon conducted on Sunday 13 August. Thanks to the 67 boats and 72 paddlers who entered. Some came from as far north as Sunshine Coast and as far South as Warrell Creek. We are pleased that more paddlers from our own club entered. There were 11 in all. This included one newcomer, Ness Knibbs and 2 paddlers returning to racing after long absences; Tony Curtis and Ron Snow (who was the oldest entrant). Hopefully our club is going through a resurrection.

In the 18 kilometre a group of 4 boats, Andrew Gordon and Stuart Thomson in a K2, Daniel Mole, Jason Keating and Shaun Sewell in K1’s, set a cracking pace for most of the race. Daniel Mole and Jason Keating did well to pull away on the last lap to finish 1st and 2nd. Daniel was awarded the Clif Weaver Trophy for the 1st individual finisher in the long distance event. Congratulations Daniel.

Let’s not forget our youngest entrants. Well done Tori, Sophie and Natalie Rixon and Caitlyn Mason.

It was an extremely pleasant day. The event had a relaxed vibe about it. Our president, Chris Porter explained to all who travelled about how our town is recovering from a devastating flood on March 31 and thanking everyone who travelled to Lismore to support our town in our recovery. Thanks to all the volunteer helpers who made it a successful event. I must say as race organiser, my job is extremely easy because everyone knows what to do and does it well. This was the first time we have used the Webscorer App. It worked well and thanks to Julie Frost from Varsity who travelled down especially to tutor us in how to use this App. All results are posted at https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=109242
